We are off to a great start. Every student is in a "just right" book. We have been working on story structure and learning more about nonfiction text and text features.
The next couple of weeks we will continue working on these concepts along with the Notice & Note Signposts. Notice and Note Signposts are a way for students to think about what they are reading and dig deeper into their book. There are 6 signposts that students will learn and begin noticing:
Contrast & Contradiction, Aha Moment, Tough Questions, Words of the Wiser, Again & Again, Memory Moment.
As we read, we will use these signposts and chart them when we find them. There is a question that each signposts has that helps us think more about the book, the characters and their relationships.
The next book that we will be focusing on is Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. This book has turned into a classic. It is set in the 1700's Territory of Maine. Matt and his father go before the rest of the family to begin settling their new claim. The time has come for Matt's father to return to Massachusetts for the rest of the family but someone has to stay at the new homestead and protect it. Matt is the only one who can do that. Once Matt's father leaves, Matt is left alone in the wilderness. Before long Matt realizes that the loneliness and the struggle to survive are not as easy as he thought it would be.
