Math 10/7/16 Our next adventure in math will be Geometry! We will review points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, parallel, and perpendicular lines and also learn how to label them correctly. This is a new skill for fourth graders. Once we are finished, we will create a Geometric Creature in Microsoft Word! This will be the highlight of the unit. We will then move on to working with area and perimeter. This is a great skill you can incorporate at home. Are you painting a room, getting new flooring, or putting up a fence? Have your fourth grader help figure out the area and perimeter for your projects. And of course, don't forget to practice your multiplication and division facts! Students are really starting to improve with their multiplication facts. Now would be a great time to start working on division facts.
9/6/16 We have been working hard on our multiplication facts and strategies for solving these facts. Please remember to spend a few minutes each night working on facts. This will make everything else in math this year easier, because everything else we do will build off of our multiplication facts.
Next we are starting multiplicative comparison word problems. These are word problems that compare one thing to anther by using multiplication. An example: Saul has 6 sea shells. Tony has 9 times as many as Saul. How many sea shells does Tony have?
Sarah traveled 35 miles. This is 7 times as far as Tim. How far did Tim travel?
We will work on drawing pictures and using manipulatives to solve these problems. Remember our goal is to understand why we are doing the steps we are doing, not just get the right answer.
